My idea for a book all started when I heard about another boy who has diabetes. He is a few years younger than me. Every day when he went to lunch, he had to drink water because he couldn’t eat too many carbs. (His doctor had him on a 45 carb lunch.) So I had the idea to raise money for him to buy Crystal Light, which has no carbs and has a little bit more taste than water. To help get my word out, I wrote a newsletter entitled “Despite Diabetes.” I interviewed a high schooler. He wrote me a very good letter. The newsletter was a great success and I raised $295 for the younger boy. I spent half the amount on his Crystal Light, and I donated the other half to the American Diabetes Association at a Walk they had at his school. His school asked me to speak at their assembly and I wrote my story on how I got diabetes.

I wrote a second newsletter and through the newsletters, I met a lot of other diabetic kids. This gave me and mom an idea to write a book for diabetic kids. I wanted to get a lot of stories like the one I got from my high school friend and the one I wrote. So I sent out e-mails to everyone I knew to contact anyone with diabetes. That is how I started getting letters for my book. I also was interviewed in two newspapers and that got me some letters from people who read the article. After a lot of work, I had around 65 letters from diabetics of all ages. My mom sent our hard work off to a publishing website and now my book is out to the public.

The book is about how people felt when they just got diabetes, and how they have handled it throughout their life. I wrote this book to help newly diagnosed diabetics (or anyone else) cope with diabetes.
